Michael DeForge is a Toronto-based illustrator best known for Lose – a series collecting his short-form comics, published through Koyama Press – which has earned recognition from the Eisners and the Doug Wright Awards. In his current webcomic, Leaving Richard’s Valley he explores a bizarre and beautifully mutated world with a meditative tone. He recently wrapped up his tenure as a designer for Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time, contributing his signature style to the show’s effects, characters, and storytelling. Michael has an extensive booklist including Very Casual, A Body Beneath, Ant Colony, First Year Healthy, Dressing, Big Kids and most recent graphic novel, Sticks Angelica, Folk Hero, is out this year from Drawn + Quarterly.
“For those who haven’t picked up a piece by Michael DeForge, you could be in for a shock. Combining a quiet tone and a jarring, angular pace with scenes that hark back to the unsettling set pieces of early nineties gross-out cartoons – his work slaps you in the face while whispering in your ear. Every word and pause feels considered, yet organic, and every moment of disgust somehow poignant.” –Off-Life Interview
